Infracost, a YC-backed tool for previewing cloud infrastructure costs, now shows carbon emissions alongside price changes. The startup integrated verified carbon data from UK-based Greenpixie, mapping it to AWS, Azure, and GCP resources. Engineers can see both metrics in GitHub or GitLab pull requests before merging Terraform code, similar to a checkout screen for cloud resources.

The feature addresses a user request from 2020, as co-founder Hassan explains. Reducing cloud carbon often lowers costs, linking sustainability and budget goals. Greenpixie’s data is ISO-14064 verified and aligned with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, providing a reliable foundation. This gives teams a dual incentive to optimize infrastructure, especially as corporate carbon targets grow more common.

Infracost’s pricing service tracks around 9 million live cloud price points, enabling accurate cost forecasting. The carbon addition builds on that mapping capability. Early adopters can test the feature via the Infracost dashboard with a GitHub or GitLab app. The company is seeking feedback on whether carbon metrics will drive engineering decisions or influence top-down corporate sustainability policies.
