The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has announced new restrictions on lithium battery-powered power banks that will take effect on 27 March 2026. Passengers will be limited to carrying two power banks each and will be prohibited from recharging them during flights. These measures aim to address emerging risks associated with lithium batteries in aviation.

The new specifications reflect ICAO's commitment to enhancing aviation safety as part of its strategic vision for zero fatalities by 2050. The International Civil Aviation Organization's Dangerous Goods Panel has been actively monitoring emerging risks posed by dangerous goods and providing expert advice to standard-setting bodies. These restrictions come after technical experts reviewed and endorsed recommendations to amend the Technical Instructions for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air.

While passengers face new limitations, airline crew will still be permitted to carry and use power banks in line with operational requirements. The changes will be formalized in an addendum to the Technical Instructions, which will be distributed to all 193 ICAO Member States. This decision represents a significant step in balancing passenger convenience with aviation safety as lithium battery technology becomes increasingly prevalent in personal electronic devices.
