How to Exist: Simple Practice for Calm

Sit for three minutes and follow two rules: don’t move, don’t fidget, and don’t indulge thoughts or daydreams—only breathe and blink. Be completely okay with doing nothing, without trying to change anything, feeling impatient, or looking elsewhere and notice how the urge to act grows.

When you stop doing everything and simply exist, a strong urge arises to look around, reread conversations, explore your teeth, wiggle toes, or any distraction. The experience feels oddly difficult, as if you’re dying, revealing that existence itself can be a heavy burden.

Humans constantly seek feelings or experiences that are not present, buying unnecessary things, starting fights, eating when not hungry, scrolling endlessly, or sipping drinks to flee the present. Even a moment of enjoyment, like eating ice‑cream, quickly becomes unbearable, driving us to the next spoonful.

To become comfortable, practice existing in short intervals: sit, breathe, notice sensations for a few seconds, inhale fully, embrace whatever arises, then exhale, staying relaxed. Repeat half‑breaths, gradually lengthening sessions, using breath as a guide. Minimum effective dose is one half‑breath.

Consistent practice can ease anxiety and increase resilience in everyday situations.
