Greenpeace and Green Planet Energy completed a pilot in Trostianets, Ukraine, retrofitting a war-damaged apartment building with heat pumps and solar power. The €218,000 system now fully supplies the 60-unit block, demonstrating a fossil-fuel-free heating alternative for residential buildings in a region heavily reliant on natural gas and coal.

The project, funded by Green Planet Energy customers, serves as a blueprint for Ukraine's 'Masterplan for Green Reconstruction.' With Russia's war having destroyed 60% of the country's gas infrastructure, decentralized renewable systems offer resilience and energy independence. The installation includes five 2,000-liter thermal storage tanks for stability.

Greenpeace's Andree Böhling argues such solutions should be prioritized over gas in EU-funded reconstruction. The pilot aims to model sustainable heating for hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian homes, showing that even near the front lines, communities can rebuild with cleaner, more secure energy sources.
