A major update to the Ground-Mounted Solar Energy in the United States (GM-SEUS) dataset has been released, expanding from 2.9 million to over 3.4 million solar panels across US solar farms. Version 2 also introduces a new rooftop arrays dataset containing 5,822 records. The dataset is available on Zenodo as a 3.4 GB download.

The analysis was performed using a high-end workstation running Ubuntu 24 LTS, equipped with an AMD Ryzen 9 9950X processor, 96 GB of DDR5 RAM, and a 4 TB NVMe SSD capable of 12,400 MB/s read speeds. The reviewer employed GDAL 3.9.3 for data processing, DuckDB with spatial extensions for querying, and QGIS 4.0.1 for visualization. Data was converted to Parquet format with ZSTD compression for efficient storage and analysis.

This comprehensive dataset provides detailed information on solar installations including panel location, installation year (ranging from 2003 to 2025), capacity, tilt, and azimuth. The geospatial data enables researchers and analysts to study US solar energy deployment patterns at scale. QGIS sees approximately 15 million monthly application launches globally, reflecting strong demand for open-source geospatial tools.
