GitHub Copilot Shifts to Usage-Based Billing Model

GitHub Copilot will transition to usage-based billing starting June 1, 2026, replacing its current premium request unit (PRU) system. The new model ties costs to token consumption—input, output, and cached tokens—using published API rates for each AI model. This aligns pricing with actual usage and ensures long-term sustainability for the platform.

The change reflects Copilot’s evolution from a basic code-completion tool into an agentic platform handling complex, multi-step tasks. While base plan prices remain unchanged—$10/month for Copilot Pro, $39/month for Pro+, and $19/user/month for Business—users will now track usage via GitHub AI Credits. Existing Copilot Business and Enterprise plans include promotional credits ($30 and $70/month, respectively) during the transition, with pooled usage across teams to reduce waste.

Individual plans like Copilot Pro ($10/month) and Pro+ ($39/month) will receive monthly AI Credits matching their subscription fees. Businesses gain granular budget controls, allowing admins to set spending limits at enterprise, cost center, or user levels. Copilot code reviews will also consume GitHub Actions minutes, billed alongside AI Credits.

The update aims to eliminate arbitrary usage caps, replacing them with transparent, scalable pricing. Admins can monitor projected costs via a new preview bill experience launching in May. While some users may face adjustments, GitHub emphasizes flexibility, allowing purchases of additional credits as needed. This shift prioritizes reliability and scalability for developers and enterprises relying on Copilot’s advanced capabilities.
