The GIMP team has released version 3.2, marking a year of volunteer development since the major 3.0 overhaul. This update introduces non-destructive layers that let users link external images and transform them without quality loss, while the Path tool now creates vector layers with adjustable fill and stroke settings.

Several key tools received significant upgrades in this release. The MyPaint Brush tool gained 20 new brushes and automatically adjusts to canvas zoom and rotation for more dynamic painting. A new Overwrite paint mode allows drawing over existing colors without blending transparency, and the on-canvas Text Editor now supports common shortcuts like Ctrl + B for bold text and can be moved freely across the canvas.

The update also expands file format support with DDS BC7 export, improved PSD layer style imports, and new SVG export capabilities thanks to vector layer support. User interface improvements include theme-aware brush thumbnails for dark mode, drag-and-drop image opening, and a System color scheme that matches your OS settings. The CMYK color selector now displays Total Ink Coverage to help with printer soft-proofing.
