German Bundestag Mandates Wire Over Signal for MPs

German Bundestag President Julia Klöckner has urged parliamentarians to switch from Signal and WhatsApp to Wire for official communications. The recommendation follows sophisticated phishing campaigns targeting politicians' messenger accounts. Klöckner herself was previously affected by a phishing operation, adding urgency to the appeal.

Wire offers architectural advantages over competitors—registration requires only an email address rather than a phone number, keeping MPs' private mobile numbers hidden from potential attackers. The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) has certified Wire for official government use, granting "Wire Bund" approval to handle information classified as VS-NfD (restricted official documents) until the end of 2028.

The certification addresses digital sovereignty concerns but carries notable limitations. The approval explicitly excludes post-quantum encryption methods, leaving vulnerability to future quantum computing threats. Wire CEO Benjamin Schilz acknowledged this gap while emphasizing the importance of certified software working alongside secure government protocols.

Conservative politicians like Andrea Lindholz are pushing for an outright Signal ban, though cybersecurity experts caution that blanket prohibitions misunderstand modern communication needs. The debate highlights that technology alone won't resolve security challenges—human factors remain the most significant vulnerability in governmental digital systems.
