A complaint has been filed with the Austrian Data Protection Authority against dict.cc regarding its consent banner, which reportedly requires users to agree to 1,741 "partner" companies accessing their data. The complainant argues that obtaining "informed consent" as mandated by the GDPR is impossible under such conditions, as reviewing the privacy policies of so many entities would take an estimated 170 hours.

Felix Mikolasch, a data protection lawyer at noyb, stated that it is "ridiculous to assume that this would allow for an informed decision." The complaint asserts that dict.cc lacks a valid legal basis for data processing and seeks an order for the deletion of unlawfully processed data, along with notification to all data recipients.

noyb also proposes a fine to deter future breaches and suggests the Authority could issue a broader ban. Martin Baumann, another noyb lawyer, emphasized that consenting to thousands of partners is "wrong" and called for an end to the practice.
