FreeBSD Foundation Director Tests Laptop Portability

Deb Goodkin, Executive Director of the FreeBSD Foundation, recently shared her experience attempting to use the OS as a daily driver on a laptop. Speaking at the Open Source Summit in Minneapolis, she described how previous attempts to run the system on portable hardware felt like an insurmountable mountain due to time-consuming setup hurdles.

Using a Framework Laptop, Goodkin found that the KDE desktop provided a functional experience where the touchscreen and wireless peripherals worked immediately. This shift follows two years of focused development by the community to improve laptop support and refine the desktop environment for general users.

Technical friction remained for enterprise software. While the webcam required manual steps to enable and Zoom initially failed, Goodkin eventually resolved these issues using online resources. Microsoft Teams only partially functioned, showing that FreeBSD laptop support still struggles with proprietary communication tools despite improving hardware compatibility.
