Former NOAA Staff Rebuild Climate.gov as Climate.us

After losing their jobs at NOAA, Rebecca Lindsey, her sister Mary Lindsey, and colleague Anna Eshelman teamed up to rebuild Climate.gov, which the Trump administration took offline. The successor site, Climate.us, preserves over 15 years of key climate data and resources.

The trove features maps, educational materials, and climate indicator reports, including the now-deleted Fifth National Climate Assessment, the government's most comprehensive analysis of climate change. This rescue was possible because US government data is public domain by law, allowing datasets to find a new home.

The site includes a climate dashboard tracking metrics like Arctic Ocean ice coverage at 15% each September, teaching resources, and NOAA's archive of oral histories. However, the project relies on donations rather than tax dollars, making it precarious.

In the absence of government support, such archives function as journalism, helping people make stronger decisions. They deserve stronger support and ultimately the restoration of government climate infrastructure.
