FBI Director Kash Patel testified before the Senate in September 2025 that the bureau has over 1,700 active investigations into NVE cases, representing a 300% increase from the previous year.

NVE groups like 764 and No Lives Matter are associated with misanthropic worldviews and generalized hatred rather than conventional extremist ideologies. Despite claims of being ideology-free, these groups often adopt aesthetics from neo-Nazism, accelerationism, and certain variants of Satanism. Law enforcement officials note a disturbing connection between NVE activities and sexual misconduct, including child exploitation.

Prosecutors originally coined the term while investigating individuals targeting societal institutions to create chaos without coherent belief systems. The phenomenon represents a shift in domestic terrorism patterns, with Patel stating NVEs constitute a significant portion of U.S. cases. Experts warn that while the threat is real, the terminology requires careful application to avoid mischaracterization of legitimate protest movements.
