The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is vital for transporting warm water northward and keeping Western Europe mild. The team identified a critical warming rate of roughly 0.3°C per decade—a pace the world is already approaching.

The mechanism hinges on ocean adaptation: slow change lets deep layers adjust; fast change outpaces the ocean’s ability to reorganise, triggering a tipping point.

For policy, this means that limiting the *rate* of warming is as crucial as capping the eventual temperature peak. Overshoot pathways that temporarily exceed the Paris Agreement target could trigger an irreversible AMOC collapse, echoing the loss of coral reefs.

Thus, emission cuts must target both absolute warming and its speed to safeguard the Atlantic’s heat engine.
