EU Finds Banned Pesticides in Everyday Foods

Foodwatch laboratories tested 64 everyday items across the Netherlands, France, Austria, and Germany. Results showed that 49 products carried pesticide residues, and 45 contained chemicals banned in the EU. One paprika sample harbored 22 different pesticides, six of them prohibited for consumers worldwide.

The investigation highlighted frequent use of Chlorfenapyr, Bifenthrin, and Spirotetramat, among others. Official data shows six of these banned pesticides shipped from EU member states to third countries in 2024–2025, only to reappear as residues in imported foods—a toxic pesticide boomerang that endangers European consumers' health.

Brussels plans to fast‑track a bundle of ten food‑safety rollbacks, weakening pesticide reviews, residue limits, and import controls. Such a rapid overhaul risks eroding protections without thorough scrutiny. Stakeholders urge lawmakers to reject the package and reinforce strict residue standards to safeguard public health across the EU.

Foodwatch calls for immediate regulatory action to halt the export of banned chemicals and enforce existing limits. Consumers must demand transparency from producers and retailers. Until authorities enforce stricter testing, the risk of contaminated staples remains high, threatening food safety across Europe for every household in the continent.
