DOJ Seeks App Store Data on Over 100,000 Car‑Tuning Users

The U.S. Department of Justice has subpoenaed Apple and Google for download and account records of EZ Lynk’s Auto Agent app, a tool that pairs with an OBD dongle to rewire diesel emissions controls. The agency claims the data will identify users who may have disabled factory‑set limits.

EZ Lynk, headquartered in the Cayman Islands, first faced federal suit in 2021 for selling "defeat devices." It denies wrongdoing, stating its hardware and software aid legitimate diagnostics and updates. The DOJ now targets more than 100,000 potential users, citing forum posts and social media that show emissions tampering.

Privacy advocates argue the subpoenas overreach, citing Fourth Amendment concerns. Apple, Google, Amazon, and Walmart are preparing to challenge the requests, a move that could set a precedent for how app‑store data is used in regulatory investigations.
