DIY Portable Serial Console: Repurposing IBM Rack Hardware

A developer is building a self-contained terminal to avoid hauling heavy CRT monitors or tying up laptops during systems work. The project centers on a used IBM 7316-TF3 rack console, a 1U unit featuring a 17-inch LCD and a slimline keyboard. This hardware provides a portable, all-in-one form factor for managing servers via serial connections.

To enable serial communication, the builder integrated a terminal emulator from Tattler Solutions for $86. This device supports VT100 standards and speeds up to 115200bps. Because the emulator's USB controller cannot handle combo devices, the original UltraNav keyboard was replaced with a cheaper Perixx model to ensure compatibility with the terminal's setup screen.

Physical modifications involved using silane metal glue and mending braces to secure the new keyboard. The final build incorporates manual USB and VGA switchboxes, allowing the unit to toggle between the terminal emulator and a direct connection to other machines. This setup creates a versatile tool that functions as both a dedicated serial console and a general-purpose monitor.
