A tech enthusiast has successfully transformed a classic black polycarbonate MacBook (model A1181) into a modern powerhouse by retrofitting it with Framework Laptop 13 components. The project involved gutting multiple used MacBooks purchased from eBay and replacing their internals with an Intel Core i7-1280P mainboard, 64GB DDR4 RAM, and a CSOT display panel. The creator documented the entire process, which required extensive soldering, 3D printing, and custom fabrication.

The most challenging aspect was integrating modern I/O ports into the MacBook's original chassis design. Using inspiration from online tutorials, the builder designed custom 3D-printed brackets and aluminum shields to mount USB hubs where the original ports once resided. The left side of the laptop required particular attention, with the creator meticulously modeling and fabricating a new I/O shield to accommodate the modern ports while maintaining the MacBook's aesthetic.

The project also included creative solutions for the iconic glowing Apple logo, which was replicated using a custom 7x7x0.28 cm LED mounted behind the chassis. The display panel was carefully centered and secured using aluminum tape, while the webcam mounting proved tricky due to size differences from the original. The finished product maintains the classic MacBook's form factor while delivering significantly improved performance and modern connectivity options.
