DARPA's X-76: Jet Speed Meets Helicopter Freedom

DARPA's X-76 aircraft aims to eliminate the battlefield's toughest choice: speed versus flexibility. Built by Bell Textron, this experimental plane combines jet-like cruise performance with vertical takeoff and landing capabilities, potentially revolutionizing military operations.

The program, officially called SPRINT (SPeed and Runway INdependent Technologies), represents a joint effort between DARPA and U.S. Special Operations Command. Following a successful Critical Design Review in May 2025, Bell Textron began building the demonstrator, which will mature technologies for runway-independent operations.

With cruise speeds exceeding 400 knots and the ability to hover in austere environments, the X-76 could provide unprecedented tactical options. The demonstrator's flight testing, scheduled for early 2028, will validate whether this revolutionary approach can finally break aviation's oldest trade-off.
