On 1st September 2026, a user discovered via Omni Disk Sweeper that the ChatGPT desktop app (formerly OpenAI Codex) stores a 1.7GB cache in ~/.cache/codex-runtimes/codex-primary-runtime. This includes full installations of Python, Node.js, native binaries for Poppler and git, and a complete copy of the LibreOffice open source office suite. LibreOffice forked from OpenOffice.org in 2010.

The cache also contains skills in the documents plugin folder that instruct Codex how to locate and use these bundled binaries. The finding highlights the substantial resource footprint of the desktop application beyond its core AI functionality.
