CERN's LHC: Heating Homes with a Particle Accelerator

CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is now providing heat to homes and businesses in Ferney-Voltaire, France. A new heat exchange system recovers thermal energy from the LHC's cooling system. This initiative, operational since mid-January, supplies a local heating network, potentially serving thousands of homes by utilizing otherwise wasted energy.

This project reflects CERN's commitment to environmental sustainability. The 27-kilometer LHC, with its complex cryogenics, generates significant heat. Instead of releasing this heat, it's now captured via a 5-MW heat exchanger. Avoiding traditional energy sources like gas prevents the emission of thousands of tonnes of CO2.

CERN plans to expand this initiative, with the potential to double the heat supplied. During the upcoming Long Shutdown 3 (LS3) for upgrades, heat recovery will continue. Other projects, such as heat recovery from the Prévessin Data Centre, further demonstrate CERN's responsible energy management, saving significant energy annually.

This is a great example of sustainable energy innovation. It showcases how large-scale scientific infrastructure can be repurposed to benefit local communities and reduce environmental impact. It will be interesting to see how this model is adopted elsewhere and expanded upon as other large-scale scientific projects come online.
