AWS Lambda Web Functions: Run HTTP Apps on Lambda

Amazon Web Services has announced AWS Lambda Web Functions, a new form factor that lets developers run standard HTTP web applications on Lambda without rewriting their code into an event handler. Applications built with Express, Hono, Fastify, Next.js, or any Node.js framework can be deployed with a single command, and Lambda automatically handles scaling, multi-region distribution, and active CPU billing. No adapters, infrastructure management, or framework lock-in are required.

With this launch, AWS Lambda offers three distinct form factors built on the same Firecracker isolation technology. Lambda Event Functions retain the event-driven, single-concurrent handler model with wall-clock billing and suit event processing and queue consumers. Lambda Web Functions use an HTTP-native model with multi-concurrent execution and active CPU billing, suited to web applications and API backends. Lambda Micro VMs provide isolated, stateful sandboxes with customer-managed lifecycles for running untrusted or user-generated code. Together, they can work within the same AWS account and operational model.

Web Functions allow each execution environment to handle up to 128 concurrent requests, so bursts of traffic can share warm environments instead of spawning a new one per request. Because CPU time is metered rather than wall-clock time, I/O-heavy work such as database queries or API calls consumes little CPU. Memory is metered for as long as the execution environment exists. This model can reduce compute costs for server-side rendering, API backends, and AI inference endpoints that stream token responses.

To get started, developers write a standard Express server that listens on the host and port set by the AWS_LAMBDA_HTTP_ENDPOINT environment variable. The same code runs locally with node index.js. Deployment uses the AWS CLI command aws lambda-web deploy, requiring no prior resource setup.
