Autoantibodies Found in Long Covid Patients May Explain Lingering Symptoms

Two new studies published in Cell Reports Medicine and Cell provide compelling evidence that autoantibodies drive Long Covid symptoms. Researchers identified antibody candidates targeting skin, epithelial, neural, and endocrine tissues in patients experiencing persistent issues weeks after coronavirus infection.

The teams conducted painstaking searches for autoantibodies, finding distinct patterns in different patient groups. Importantly, IgG fractions from affected individuals cross-reacted with mouse tissues in laboratory tests, and transfer to living mice reproduced key symptoms including pain, fatigue, and coordination problems.

These findings confirm Long Covid as a legitimate autoimmune condition comparable to lupus or multiple sclerosis. The research validates what many clinicians suspected but couldn't prove with hard data. Many patients worldwide experience ongoing respiratory and neurological complications after viral infections.

Treatment remains challenging since autoimmune conditions lack straightforward therapies. However, B-cell-targeting approaches used for lupus may offer pathways forward. Identifying specific protein targets and susceptible individuals could enable preventive strategies for this condition affecting millions globally.
