The Reutter watches (1929–1932) preceded the Atmos clock, using mercury-based motors to harness temperature fluctuations. In 1935–38, the first true Atmos II debuted with a gas-filled metal bellows, establishing the iconic design lasting until the 1990s. Serial production began in 1939.

Caliber 519 (Atmos III) refined adjustment and simplified construction, boosting output from 2,000 (1948) to 10,000 (1951). Intermediate caliber 522/532 models followed, then the mass-produced caliber 526 (Atmos V) reached 1,500 units monthly, often gifted by corporations. The larger caliber 528 (Atmos VI/VII) revived original dimensions with advanced movements.

From 1967, caliber 528/1 (Atmos VIII) became the primary series, featuring removable front dials and special editions like Luigi Colani’s “fantasy models.” Limited editions (1,500–3,000 pieces) commemorated anniversaries, blending vintage Reutter aesthetics with modern tech.

The 1983 caliber 540 redesign introduced a slimmer profile, a moon-phase complication (caliber 544), and plasma-welded bellows for longevity. Later special models included the Atmos Atlantis (1995) with a glass trapeze on metal cones, and the Atmos du Millenaire perpetual calendar spanning 2000–3000 AD.
