A recent Redfin survey reveals that 53% of U.S. residents oppose building AI data centers in their neighborhoods, with only 34% in support. This opposition is stronger than for other developments, such as apartment complexes (39% opposition). Concerns include strain on electricity and water resources, noise, and large structures. New York has even implemented a statewide ban on large data center construction.

Despite public apprehension, AI data centers can offer financial benefits. In northern Virginia, tax revenue from data center equipment has significantly boosted education spending in Loudoun County and Prince William County, with education spending per resident nearly doubling over the last decade. This increased revenue has also allowed these counties to lower property tax rates for individual homeowners.

Older generations show higher opposition rates, with 65% of Baby Boomers and 60% of Gen Xers opposing data centers, compared to 42% of Gen Zers and 43% of millennials. Real estate agents note that buyers are increasingly concerned about the potential negative impacts of data centers on their communities.
