Amazon MGM Studios canceled its planned Stargate revival, a series from writer‑producer Martin Gero that was slated to begin filming this fall. The project, announced in a November video with veteran creators Brad Wright and Joseph Mallozzi, was to stream globally on Prime Video. Studio executives cited concerns that Gero’s vision would not attract viewers beyond the existing fanbase, making a high‑budget streaming series hard to justify. The revival was greenlit under Amazon MGM television head Peter Friedlander, with Nick Pepper and Matt King overseeing development. Both have since departed, and genre projects now report to Brett Fetter, signaling a strategic shift. This reflects broader doubts about niche revivals.

The writer’s room assembled in January, and the crew announced production designer Nathan Crowley and VFX supervisor Mohen Leo in March. Casting had entered early stages and a London‑based shoot was set for autumn. With the cancellation, the project returns to the drawing board, and Amazon MGM may recruit a new showrunner to give the franchise a fresh perspective. The studio has no replacement timeline disclosed yet.
