Google Launches XR Blocks for AI XR Development

Google has introduced XR Blocks, an open-source framework designed to accelerate the development of AI-driven extended reality experiences for the web. Unveiled by Ruofei Du and Benjamin Hersh from Google XR, this tool addresses the high-friction process of prototyping immersive applications. Currently, developers face significant challenges integrating disparate systems for perception, rendering, and interaction.

XR Blocks bridges this gap by providing a modular architecture based on a 'Reality Model.' This model abstracts complex low-level code into high-level primitives such as User, World, Interface, AI, and Agents. Built on accessible technologies like WebXR, Three.js, and Gemini, the framework lowers the barrier to entry for creators. It allows for rapid prototyping of depth-aware interactions, custom gesture models, and context-aware intelligent assistants.

Presented at ACM UIST 2025, XR Blocks empowers developers to move from concept to interactive prototype much faster, prioritizing a seamless creator experience over complex, rigid system integration.
