Associated Press Sep 23, 2026, 06:12 PM ET LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Aminata Seck, a 26-year-old Kentucky State University women's basketball player from Dakar, Senegal, was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement last month upon arriving at Louisville's Muhammad Ali International Airport. Seck entered the United States on a student visa in September 2019 but overstayed her welcome, according to the Department of Homeland Security. Her attorney, Sadiqa Reynolds, stated Seck missed a visa deadline due to back surgery and an ACL injury.

The Louisville Courier Journal reported Reynolds said Seck was detained Aug. 7 while planning to travel with her team to an HBCU tournament. DHS confirmed an immigration judge ordered Seck removed a year ago after she failed to appear at a hearing. Seck was wearing a leg brace for a knee injury at the time of her arrest and is currently receiving hospital treatment.

She remains listed on the Grayson County, Kentucky, Detention Center's online inmate roster. Democratic U.S. Rep. Morgan Mc Garvey, representing a district including Louisville, said he is monitoring her situation, calling the Trump administration's actions cruel.

Seck, a 6-foot-4 center, was named to the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Conference third team last season after leading the team with 11.7 points and 7.3 rebounds. She also earned the SIAC Women's Basketball Elite 16 award for academic achievement. Kentucky State University declined to comment, citing privacy.
