After a woman attending Cornell University accused seven fraternity members of sexually assaulting her in 2024, the university convened a closed proceeding to determine discipline. Sanctions ranged from writing a paper and completing training to expulsion from the school. Two fraternity members were expelled, another barred from campus, two suspended, and the remaining received lighter punishments. All denied wrongdoing, and the Tompkins County district attorney declined to prosecute in 2024. Their fraternity, Chi Phi, has been banned from campus.

Jane Doe, in her lawsuit, claimed she was incapable of consent due to severe intoxication. The lawsuit alleged defendants were offered the chance to mitigate conduct by submitting essays, which Cornell disputed. A three-member Title IX panel met over 12 days in May 2025, finding some men responsible for sexual assault while determining Jane Doe was not assaulted by all accused.

The investigation detailed alcohol and drug-fueled activities on Oct. 19, 2024, at the Chi Phi fraternity house, where Jane Doe alleged ketamine and alcohol were administered without consent. Matthew Ingalls and Jonathan Newell were expelled, with Ingalls found responsible for sexual assault through manipulation and exploitation of Jane Doe.
