The Cleveland Cavaliers have promoted Brandon Weems to general manager under team president Koby Altman. Weems spent the past decade in the organization, serving as assistant GM since 2022, and replaces Mike Gansey, who left for the Philadelphia 76ers in May. Altman praised Weems's judgment and leadership in player evaluation and roster building.

Weems, 40, is a childhood friend and former high school teammate of LeBron James. James's agent, Rich Paul, called Weems "basically LeBron's brother" during free agency, noting his presence helped Cleveland's pursuit before James signed with the 76ers. James congratulated Weems on social media.

The Cavaliers also named former NBA player Jose Calderon assistant GM. Before joining Cleveland, Weems coached at Oakland University and served on staffs at Drexel and Kentucky under John Calipari. He played at Walsh University, winning an NAIA title in 2005.
