OpenAI's upcoming AI device is reportedly a hockey-puck-sized, doughnut-shaped smart speaker designed for portability and personality. The device, envisioned to cost between $300 and $400, features no display but includes speaker grilles and microphones for voice interaction with ChatGPT. It aims to offer human-like responses and learn user habits over time.

Moving components and lights will convey the speaker's status, while a camera system and sensors will gather environmental information. Powered by a battery, the device is expected to utilize premium metal materials. Notably, former Apple design chief Jony Ive is involved in its design, following OpenAI's acquisition of his io device startup.

This development comes amidst a trade secrets lawsuit filed by Apple against OpenAI. While Apple claims OpenAI misled a supplier, OpenAI asserts its device is entirely novel and distinct from Apple's offerings. Apple is developing its own home hub and a tabletop robot, but these are expected to launch later or have different form factors and features compared to OpenAI's portable speaker, which is slated for introduction later this year ahead of a 2027 launch.
