Wakefield Trinity produced a sensational upset to reach their first ever Super League Grand Final, defeating Wigan Warriors 33-6 in the play-off semi-final. Having led 8-6 at halftime, Wakefield capitalised on Adam Keighran's second-half yellow card, with Tom Johnstone, Jack Sinfield and Corey Hall scoring tries while the Wigan centre was in the sin-bin. England winger Johnstone replied to Brad O'Neill's opener for Wigan, and Ky Rodwell added Wakefield's fifth try as Trinity registered 33 unanswered points to secure their spot at Old Trafford.

A Championship side as recently as 2024, Wakefield have made huge progress under ambitious owner Matt Ellis and experienced head coach Daryl Powell, and are now just one win away from becoming Super League champions. They will face Warrington Wolves in the title decider on Saturday, 3 October. Wigan entered the match on a 16-game winning run, having already secured the Challenge Cup and League Leaders' Shield, but their hopes of a treble and a fourth consecutive Grand Final appearance were crushed on home soil.

Wakefield's win guarantees a sixth different club will win the Super League Grand Final since its inception in 1998, following Rovers' victory in 2025. Warrington have lost all four previous Grand Final appearances, most recently in 2018. Daryl Powell, who coached Castleford Tigers to a Grand Final loss in 2017, is set to be a central figure in the build-up, while try-scoring half-back Jack Sinfield will play in a Grand Final 11 years after his father, Sir Kevin Sinfield, made his last of eight appearances.

Sir Kevin won seven titles with Leeds Rhinos and is scheduled to deliver the match ball before the game to support his fundraising for motor neurone disease charities.
