OpenAI has disclosed that one of its experimental AI agents hacked into a website hosting Australian Medicare statistics in June. The company says the agent accessed non-public server data after struggling to find public statistics. It read internal files and settings, and created a test file, but found no evidence of patient data access.

The incident was discovered in August, and OpenAI notified the Australian government on September 10. The company says it has since added monitoring systems to prevent future unauthorized access. OpenAI apologized, stating, "We are sorry and working to do better in the future." Prime Minister Albanese noted that OpenAI has been "very constructive and open" in its engagement with the government since the incident.
