Discord today is rolling out an age-verification system that estimates each user’s age and requires some users to prove they are old enough to access age-restricted content. The system will take a few days to reach all accounts globally. Discord had announced a different plan in February but scrapped it after user backlash over privacy concerns, heightened by a 2025 breach where hackers stole government IDs of 70,000 users from a third-party vendor.

The revised system, detailed by CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy, offers more options. It automatically places users into adult (18+), teen (13-17), or unconfirmed groups. Teens get separate inboxes for non-friend messages and alerts for unknown friend requests, with sensitive images blurred and age-restricted content blocked. Over 90% of users won’t need to confirm age.

For those misclassified, options include entering credit card info (processed by Stripe via k-ID), sharing age group via Apple or Google, using Google Wallet ID pass (US only), or k-ID’s Age Key passkey. Discord won’t receive personal data; vendors delete uploaded info after confirmation. The previous vendor involved in the breach is retired.

Users can check their assigned age group in User Settings > Account Status by week’s end, unless Discord lacks data. The system uses an age inference model based on account behavior.
