Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the US Open quarter-finals with a 6-4 6-3 victory over Taylor Townsend at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The Belarussian retained her world No 1 spot despite an unconvincing performance featuring 11 breaks of serve from 19 games. Sabalenka, who has spent 99 weeks at the top of the rankings, needs to win a third straight Flushing Meadows title and for Elena Rybakina to lose before the semi-finals to reach a century at No 1.

Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula remain within striking distance in a four-way battle for the top ranking. Sabalenka overcame a break down in the second set, stating, "I was just trying to stay focused on myself, not only point by point but ball by ball." Martina Navratilova praised her returning serve and passing shots, while Annabel Croft highlighted her ferocious intensity and mentality.

"She's a great showwoman and puts on a show whenever she plays tennis," Croft added. Sabalenka has not dropped a set so far and looks in very good shape. The US Open continues live on Sky Sports from August 30."
