Naomi Osaka urged the growing number of social media influencers at the US Open to respect the sport's "etiquette" following her second-round win over Katerina Siniakova. The issue has become a talking point at the tournament after Osaka's opening win over Anastasia Zakharova on Monday, in which viral videos surfaced of some influencers not paying attention to the tennis.

After overcoming a mid-match wobble to beat Siniakova 6-2 5-7 6-1 and reach the third round in New York, Osaka said: "I think obviously if you come to a sporting event, you have to respect the sport. I feel like it's common courtesy to read up on the sport, especially the etiquette."

Osaka added: "I feel like it could be a good thing for people to make the sport of tennis popular to their specific audience, but I think it has to be managed a lot better, especially in the situation like [my] first-round match. Overall, I think there is huge positives. You want people to continue to grow the sport. I just think it has to be in a way that everyone knows the rules and the etiquette."

She noted that the umpire told the crowd to be quiet more than she'd ever heard, and that in her first match, people shouting bothered her opponent too. Osaka wore a more understated all-white outfit for the second round, after her first-round hooded robe with newspaper clippings drew attention. The 13th seed advanced with a 6-2 5-7 6-1 victory, dropping only one game in the decider.
