Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli produced a historic comeback victory at the Italian Grand Prix, winning from 19th on the grid at Monza. The 20-year-old Italian extended his championship lead to 66 points with his seventh win of the 2026 season, becoming the first Italian to win their home Grand Prix in 60 years. Antonelli overcame grid penalties and beat teammate George Russell, who started from the front row, in a drive described as "perfection" by Sky Sports pundit Nico Rosberg.

The 2016 world champion praised Antonelli's speed and race management, calling it "unheard of" for a driver in only their second season. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff revealed he anticipated a "special moment," stating he felt Antonelli was "going to walk over water here in Monza" and sensed the victory was his mission. Wolff noted he discussed the potential with Antonelli's father, who also foresaw the win.

Martin Brundle hailed the driver as "King Kimi" following the remarkable drive, which stands as the second-lowest grid position victory in Formula 1's 76-year history.
