Why the Longest International Break Is Good

The 2026-27 season introduces FIFA’s new international calendar, featuring a 16‑day break from Sept. 21 to Oct. 6, allowing four matches in one window. This reduces early‑season disruptions from three to two breaks, cutting total club‑season pauses from six to five weeks. The new schedule also consolidates breaks in October, November and March, while keeping June, July and the AFC Asian Cup (Jan. 7‑Feb. 5) as later windows.

Former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger has long advocated fewer, longer breaks to ease player workload and match congestion, though he warned of injury recovery challenges. Fans welcomed the change, noting fewer interruptions early in the club season, though a three‑week gap between matches may require adjustment.
