Frances Tiafoe completed a stunning comeback at the 2026 US Open, rallying from two sets down to defeat fellow American Alex Michelsen 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (6) in a four-hour, 39-minute quarterfinal at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Tiafoe became only the second man in major history to win a quarterfinal in a deciding-set tiebreak after trailing 0-2, joining Andre Agassi (2005). The 28-year-old, now in his third US Open semifinal, celebrated emotionally with the raucous New York crowd after embracing the 22-year-old Michelsen, who was playing in his first major quarterfinal.

"I'm pumped about it... but I don't feel like it's... enough," Tiafoe said. "I have higher hopes for myself. So yeah, it's great [but] the tournament is still going." Tiafoe has long targeted the US Open title, calling it his annual goal. His 2026 run includes a fourth-round upset of 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev and matches played largely on Louis Armstrong Stadium before returning to Ashe. Fan chants of "1-2-3, Foe!" have echoed throughout the tournament as Tiafoe chases his first Grand Slam final appearance.
