The SEC expressed deep disappointment after Louisiana Attorney General Elizabeth Murrill filed a motion to dismiss the conference's federal lawsuit against LSU and its officials. The dispute centers on LSU coach Lane Kiffin's attempt to add former NFL players to the roster. Murrill argued the SEC lacks personal jurisdiction and that the complaint fails to state a claim.

She noted that the players in question were not rostered and LSU's roster is now full for the 2026-27 season. The SEC filed an amended complaint on Sept. 8 and scheduled a vote on expelling LSU, which never occurred after LSU declined to add Dae'Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris. Murrill also claimed the SEC's alleged First Amendment harm is self-inflicted, as LSU cannot force the conference to act.

Defendants include Kiffin, LSU president Wade Rousse, athletics director Verge Ausberry, and board members. Murrill asserted sovereign immunity protects the state officials, and the SEC cannot overcome this. The SEC stated it remains committed to resolving concerns about LSU's adherence to conference rules and is preparing its court response.
