Lando Norris landed the first pole position of his world championship defence, beating Lewis Hamilton to the top spot for the Hungarian Grand Prix by just 0.012 seconds. Hamilton settled for second, ahead of Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc.

Kimi Antonelli, who holds a 45-point lead over Hamilton, starts fourth after Mercedes' exclusive run of poles came to a stuttering end. George Russell lines up seventh as his title assault threatens to combust following another reliability failure after his last lap.

Oscar Piastri finished fifth, with Max Verstappen sixth after spinning out in the final session. Further back, Fernando Alonso finished 16th, a minor boost for Aston Martin, who brought 16 upgraded components to salvage a season described by Adrian Newey as a "complete nightmare."

At the back of the grid, Cadillac's Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Pérez prop up the field, while Williams' Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon were both eliminated in Q1.
