Most smartphones feature an IP67 or IP68 rating, but the second numerical digit represents water-resistance levels, not waterproofing. Hot steam is a different animal altogether. In a hot shower, steam can turn back into liquid on and around your phone. That sounds fine if your phone has an IP68 rating, but water is a relentless force of nature. It will find a way in through the charging port, speakers, buttons and seals. Combined with heat, it gradually wears down protections that keep liquid out.

Phone manufacturers are direct about this. Apple's Support page states iPhone owners should avoid saunas and steam rooms, and reminds them liquid damage is not covered under warranty. Google says the same, adding that a Bluetooth speaker is the better option. Water resistance ratings are specific to liquid water under certain conditions, not heat and humid air from a shower. Rapid cooling in a moist environment creates condensation, both inside and outside the device.

Repeated or significant heat exposure can permanently impact a smartphone. The battery's capability is a big deal pre-purchase, and heat exposure accelerates battery aging. Those tiny adhesives and seals don't play well with heat and moisture. The damage is rarely immediately obvious. Anytime your phone gets wet, wipe it down immediately and don't plug anything into the charging port. The best fix is not getting your smartphone wet in the first place.
