Hacking group ShinyHunters has allegedly stolen extensive sensitive information from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, including details about employees and job applicants. Reuters reports seeing a sample of the data, and 404 Media received confirmation from a ShinyHunters representative. The hackers also appeared responsible for an unauthorized takeover of the FBI website earlier this week.

The attackers claim to have 2-3TB of data, with samples containing names, addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, social security numbers, and emergency contacts for 5,000 employees. They may also have gathered details about work assignments and FBI units focused on intelligence, security, and counter-espionage, including operations involving China and Russia.

Unlike previous ShinyHunters attacks targeting Ticketmaster and Rockstar Games for financial extortion, this action is reportedly "not financially motivated." Instead, it aims to coerce the FBI to remove or amend a previous statement about the group from May, which accused ShinyHunters of exaggerating claims to prompt payment.
