The latest PlayStation 5 system update, version 26.06-14.00.00, enables Enhance PSSR Image Quality by default for PS5 Pro owners. Games based on the original PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution will now automatically use Sony's newer upscaler without needing to toggle a setting. However, games that don't already support PSSR are unaffected.

Sony calls it "upgraded" or "enhanced" PSSR rather than PSSR 2.0. The newer version uses a different neural network and algorithm. Until now, PS5 Pro owners had to manually enable the setting for games built around the original PSSR tech.

PSSR is Sony's machine-learning upscaler for PS5 Pro, allowing games to render at lower resolution and upscale for better visuals without full performance cost. The initial release had issues like shimmering textures and distortion around fine text. The enhanced version offers fine detail clarity, image reconstruction, and stability in motion. Developers note less flickering and afterimages, and more refined details like hair and foliage. The technology stems from Project Amethyst, Sony's graphics research with AMD.

Games supporting the newer version will use it by default, but you can disable the override via Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Enhance PSSR Image Quality. The update also adds an on-screen voice chat indicator and a Community Activity widget to the Welcome Hub.
