Meta is shifting 7,000 employees into four new AI-focused organizations while cutting 8,000 jobs this week, per internal communications from HR head Janelle Gale. Workers reassigned will join teams building AI tools and apps using AI native design structures with fewer management layers. Some had already been transferred before notifications went out.

Meta told employees in late April it was cutting 8,000 roles and closing 6,000 open positions to run more efficiently. The reassignments follow CEO Mark Zuckerberg's push to spend $115 billion to $135 billion this year mostly on AI, after the metaverse bet largely failed to deliver. By end of 2025, the company had roughly 78,000 employees, making these cuts nearly 10 percent of its workforce.

The move signals Meta's aggressive pivot toward AI infrastructure and products. Reuters says the company will cut more jobs later this year. Workers laid off receive 16 weeks of severance plus two extra weeks per year of service. The strategy mirrors what other tech firms have done — trimming traditional roles to fund AI expansion.
