How to Force Quit on Windows PC

When an app gets stuck, there are a number of ways to terminate it. If you're a long-time Mac user moving to Windows, you'll be familiar with the option to force quit apps. On Windows, app management works a bit differently. Clicking the X icon in an app closes its window, though this won't always end the process.

The basic way to close most Windows apps is by clicking the X icon at the top-right of the window. Using the keyboard shortcut Alt + F4 does the same. Depending on the program, this will either fully end the process or relegate the app to the system tray. Generally, tools like Discord, Spotify, Slack and Telegram won't fully close. Other apps like Word, File Explorer, Notepad and Paint properly close.

Apps that don't fully close usually offer another option under File > Quit or File > Exit, with a shortcut like Ctrl + Q. Right-clicking their icon in the system tray and choosing Quit or Close usually works too.

If an app freezes, use Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc). Click the Processes tab, find the app, and hit End task. This forcefully terminates the process, so you'll lose unsaved work.
