The first Googlebooks are up for pre-order today, arriving on October 4. At a press event in New York City, Google and its hardware partners showcased five new laptops and laid out their vision for Googlebooks as the Android-based evolution of Chrome OS. The company's main pitch is making a laptop that works as seamlessly with Android phones as a Mac does with an iPhone.

Sameer Samat, president of Android, acknowledged the gap, saying there isn't a laptop platform built to work seamlessly with an Android phone. He argued laptops have been largely unchanged for over 30 years and need rethinking for the mobile age. AI features play a central role, including an evolved version of the Magic Pointer, an AI-powered cursor.

The platform is built on Android but includes an isolated Linux environment with a full Terminal for developers, along with the Titan hardware security chip and built-in malware protection found on Chromebooks. Googlebooks aim for tighter phone-to-laptop integration, allowing users to log in with saved passwords, Wi-Fi networks, and message history. The "continue on" feature hands off apps from phone to laptop, demonstrated with Band Lab.
