Google DeepMind has released Weather Next 3, an updated AI weather model offering more detailed forecasts for temperature, moisture, and wind speed. It is particularly useful for renewable energy companies, forecasting 100-meter wind speeds at turbine height and high-resolution cloud cover and solar radiation for solar farms.

Weather Next 3 provides hourly and higher-resolution forecasts on a 5-kilometer grid, compared to the 25-kilometer grid of Weather Next 2. This improvement comes from training on live satellite data instead of relying solely on numerical weather prediction models with a six-hour lag. The model also uses sparse weather station data for more detailed humidity forecasts.

Combining precipitation data from NASA and Google's satellite analysis, Weather Next 3 improves precipitation predictions by up to 50 percent, especially in regions with historically less reliable forecasts. It will power weather experiences in Google Search, the Gemini app, Google Maps, and the Google Maps Weather API.
