General Motors will reintroduce Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in a split-screen interface for the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks. The new UI allows drivers to access smartphone mirroring functions while retaining visibility of vehicle gauges, reducing the need to switch screens and potentially lowering driver distraction. GM worked with Apple and Google to develop the solution, which leverages the trucks’ 60 inches of total screen real estate, including a front-passenger video streaming display.

Mike Wahlstrom, GM’s executive director of software product management, emphasized customer demand for simplicity and quick access to vehicle features. This marks a reversal from GM’s 2021 plan to phase out CarPlay and Android Auto in favor of its Gemini-based infotainment system, citing concerns over display takeover and subscription monetization. The split-screen format addresses the issue of smartphone interfaces obscuring critical vehicle data.

GM has not confirmed whether CarPlay will return to its electric vehicles, as the Q&A focused solely on light-duty pickups. GM EVs without CarPlay can still access Apple Music via existing phone app integration.
