Apple Watch Series 12 Siri Recap Listens All Day, Apple Locked Out of Audio

The Apple Watch Series 12 introduces Audio Intelligence features including Siri Recap, which summarizes daily conversations, and Live Rewind, which retrieves the preceding 15 seconds as text. Automatic Shazam recognition and alerts for sounds like alarms and doorbells use the same system. Because Siri Recap operates without notifying other speakers, privacy concerns arise about what the watch hears and where audio goes.

Apple's September privacy paper details the S11 chip's Secure Exclave as the solution. Microphone audio exists temporarily in a protected hardware buffer that continuously overwrites itself — like a conveyor belt in a locked room — without becoming a playable or retrievable recording. Apple states neither the operating system, apps, users, nor Apple itself can access this data.

Siri Recap can transfer encrypted audio from the Apple Watch to a paired iPhone for text conversion. The feature produces short summaries without preserving complete transcripts or identifying individual speakers. Audio Intelligence requires Apple Watch Series 12 or Apple Watch Ultra 4 with the S11 chip, plus iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 17e, iPhone Air, or later models with a Secure Exclave.
