Saudi Arabia faces strategic shock after Iran-backed attacks and President Trump’s refusal to take military action against the Houthis, according to former diplomats and analysts.

The kingdom has faced attacks from the east, south and north. A Saudi oil tanker was struck in the Strait of Hormuz, killing two sailors. Houthi forces seized territory on a shipping route, while Saudi authorities shut a critical oil pipeline after a drone attack by an Iran-backed Iraqi militia.

Michael Ratney, former U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia, called it the Saudis’ “worst-case scenario.” Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s long effort to build a security partnership with Trump and his family has not produced the support Riyadh sought.

Iran and Gulf countries also failed to narrow their positions before a planned meeting was postponed. Analysts say the crisis exposes the costs of the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran across the Middle East.
